Some are just simply looking for a new hobby while others refuse to pay the high prices that are commonplace for mushrooms in grocery stores and supermarkets. No matter the reason, the majority of individuals find growing the delicacy to be very enjoyable, simple, and low cost. Follow this growing mushrooms guide to find out more!

Several Methods

Mushrooms can be grown indoors or out. They can be grown from kits, on logs, or in incubation chambers. The most popular indoor method is the use of kits that are sold in gardening or retail stores as well as online. The use of hardwood logs placed in a well shaded area is the preferred method for outdoor growth. However, this outdoor technique takes at least six months to harvest whereas indoor kits will usually begin to yield within one week to a month depending upon the variety of mushroom chosen.

Choosing a Type of Mushroom

All types of mushrooms have a different flavor. Some are mild while others have a stronger flavor. Individuals must select the type of mushroom that they wish to grow before getting started. There are usually kits available for every type. However, if unable to find a kit for the type of mushroom selected, individuals can simply purchase the spawns and other supplies and created their own growing beds. Want to learn more about kits? Check out: Mushroom Kits 101 – How to Choose the Best for more information!

Simple Tips for Success

It is unlikely that a person’s attempt at growing mushrooms will fail. There are huge amounts of tips for successful gardening. Some of those tips are as follows:

Only use non-chlorinated water such as well, rain, or spring water.

Place mushroom beds in a cool, damp, dark area. Basements and cellars are suggested but a large closet or cupboard will also do well.

Keep the temperature in the area where the beds are in a range of 55 to 65 degrees F.

Allow very minimal amounts of sunlight to enter the area.

Never allow mushroom beds to dry out. Keep them moist but not wet.

Moisten beds by using some type of spray bottle to mist the water onto them. Never pour water on the beds.

Harvest mushrooms when they have fully developed according to the type. For some this may be a week and for others it could take up to a month.

Mushrooms should be harvested by cutting the stem at the base as close to the soil as possible. Some prefer to simply pinch the stems with their fingers in order to harvest.

Harvesting will come in waves. Mushrooms should be harvested as soon as they are mature enough in order to promote further maturation. This thins the beds and allows other mushrooms to pop out.

After harvesting, mushrooms are ready to be eaten. No matter how an individual plans to use the mushrooms, they should always thoroughly wash them first. Some people freeze excess mushrooms or dry them to extend the shelf life. With the enhanced flavor that fresh homegrown mushrooms have, they make a good addition to numerous recipes.

Many people around the world desire mushrooms. In some places, mushrooms are even considered to be a delicacy of sorts. There are many different types of mushrooms and each is unique in its own way. One of the most popular mushrooms is the Shiitake mushrooms. This mushroom adds a rich, deep color as well as a smoky flavor to various dishes such as stir-fry, steaks, and even soups. Shiitake mushrooms originate from China and are grown using logs of hardwood as the growing medium. These can be grown at home by individuals who enjoy gardening and want to save money at the same time. Follow our mushroom growing guide for more advice! Before starting, a person needs to have only the following:
•	Saw.
•	Log of hardwood.
•	Hammer.
•	Shiitake mushroom spawn plugs.
•	Drill that has a one half inch bit.

Simple Steps

The hardwood log should be gotten in the fall of the year. It should be beech, oak, chestnut, or alder. The log’s diameter needs to be from three to seven inches and should be from three to four feet in length. There are many reputable sources of Shiitake spawn plugs. Some simple research and comparison shopping will lead a potential gardener to the best source. Once these two important components of the growing process have been gathered, the individual is ready to begin gardening mushrooms. Some simple steps to the process are as follows:

•	Along the length of the log, a row of half inch holes that are an inch deep are to be drilled. These holes need to be about six inches apart.
•	Place a mushroom spawn plug in every hole and gently tap the plug into the hole using a hammer.
•	Use water that is non-chlorinated such as spring, rain, or well water to thoroughly soak the log.
•	Put the log in a shady and cool area such as in an area of woods or on the side of a building that gets a lot of shade. A cellar or greenhouse also makes a good spot for the log.
•	This process of growing mushrooms takes several months and it is important to water the log so that the wood remains damp not wet or soggy.
•	In the spring of the year, the logs should be hammered or dropped in order to stimulate the fruiting bodies to emerge from the holes in the log.
•	Continue to watch for the fruiting bodies to pop out of the holes in the log.
•	Once they have emerged, they are ready for harvesting.
•	Mushrooms should be harvested by clipping the stem along the surface of the log. They can also be harvested by using the fingers to pinch them as close to the surface of the log as possible.

Many times there will be another harvest of mushrooms to emerge from the holes in the fall of the year. These mushrooms are ready to eat and should be thoroughly washed before being eaten.
In supermarkets today, mushrooms are outrageously priced. Many people enjoy mushrooms and consider them to be a delicacy. To fight the inflated prices, a growing number of people have begun to grow their own mushrooms indoors at home. One of the easiest and most productive to grow is the oyster mushroom. Oyster mushrooms can be used fresh or they can be stored for future use by freezing or drying them. They have a rather mild flavor that enhances many recipes. Get started with our handy mushroom growing guide!

How to Get Started

There are several techniques for growing mushrooms such as using a starter kit. These kits come complete with everything needed to grow the mushrooms. Another technique for producing oyster mushrooms indoors using spawn follows:

•	Mushroom spawn are simply spores and seedlings and can be purchased from many gardening stores, nurseries, or even online.
•	Choose an area in the home that is dark and cool in which to grow the mushrooms.
•	Cover the bottom of a pan with straw.
•	Maintain the temperature of the room at seventy degrees.
•	Spread the spawns throughout the straw. Roots of the spawn will attach to the straw after three to four weeks.
•	Once the roots have formed and attached, the temperature should be lowered between 55 to 60 degrees F.
•	Use a high grade of potting soil to cover the spawn. Sprinkle the soil over the spawn until it is an estimated inch thick.
•	Cover the entire pan with a damp not wet cloth.
•	Maintain moisture in the cloth by using a spray bottle.
•	Check the soil to make sure it is moist at least every two days. Never let it dry out. Spray the soil until it is damp.
•	Always use non-chlorinated water such as rain, well, or spring water.
•	Never fertilize the spawn or mushrooms.

After about a month, mushrooms should start to appear. Oyster mushrooms will be ready for harvesting when the caps are spread out fully. The caps will be open and will separate away from the stem of the mushroom. To harvest simply cut the stem flush with the soil. With most varieties of mushrooms, harvest will come in waves. Harvesting mushrooms when they are ready will help to boost the growth of other mushrooms. After harvesting, oyster mushrooms usually begin to turn bad within three or four days. Be sure to properly store mushrooms. Blanching oyster mushrooms that have been fresh cut before placing them in a freezer aids in killing enzymes so they do not lose their consistency and flavor. Most individuals who have raised mushrooms at home report that their mushrooms have much more flavor than those that are offered in supermarkets and grocery stores. Growing mushrooms is not only cost effective but a very relaxing and enjoyable activity for most. Interested in other types of mushrooms?
One such disadvantage is a lack of any space to garden. Various individuals have caught on to a growing trend of growing organic mushrooms at home. Some do it for fun while others do it because it is cost effective. Mushrooms retail at a very high price and many cannot afford the delicacy. The simplest way for those living in an apartment to grow mushrooms successfully is with the use of a mushroom growing kit.

These kits are available at many retail and gardening stores nationwide. They are relatively low cost in a range of twenty to thirty dollars. These kits include detailed instructions for an enjoyable growing experience.

Helpful Tips for Gardeners

Before choosing a kit, individuals should decide which variety of mushroom they wish to grow. Most are usually available in various sizes such as standard and giant. The most popular kits are for growing Button mushrooms, Portabella, and Enoki mushrooms. Each variety will differ in the amount of time before a harvest of mushrooms is ready. Some helpful tips and knowledge about these kits are as follows:

•	Inspect the chosen kit to make sure there is no mold or any problematic growths. If anything seems to be wrong with kit it should be returned for a replacement.
•	Follow all included instructions. Never skip a step or add a step.
•	The kit should be placed in a dark area of the apartment such as a closet or cabinet.
•	The temperature should be maintained between 65 and 75 degrees F.
•	After setting up the kit, it is important to maintain the moisture. Only mist with water using a spray bottle. Never water until the kit is wet or soggy. Never allow it to dry out.
•	When small white pinheads appear, this is the fruiting start. Humidity should be maintained during this stage.
•	If no fruiting appears in the given amount of time, the kit can be put into a refrigerator in order to push the process of fruiting. If there is still no sign of fruiting, contact the vendor of the kit for any possible replacement.
•	When the mushrooms pop out they are ready to be harvested.
•	Cut these at the base of the stem or pinch them with the fingers to harvest.
•	Most kits will produce multiple harvests over several weeks and can produce up to five pounds of mushrooms.
•	After the kit stops producing a harvest, it can be disposed of. Most kits can simply be put in a compost pile and often they will yield another harvest there.

Freshly harvested mushrooms can be washed and eaten. Some individuals dry their mushrooms in order to preserve the flavor and extend their shelf life. Once the mushrooms have been harvested they are ready for the table. Fresh mushrooms should be thoroughly washed before adding to any dishes.

Mushrooms, however, are very expensive on the retail market. For this reason, some people cannot find it within their budgets to purchase mushrooms. Instead, there has been an influx in the number of individuals who have begun to grow them at home. The vast majority of people tend to think this is a complicated task. Contrary to these beliefs, it is a relatively simple process, especially with the use of kits that are currently available in retail.

Growth of a Mushroom

All mushrooms consist of a cap and stem which make up the fruiting body. These are the most commonly eaten parts of a mushroom and the parts that are usually sold in most grocery stores. The largest part of the mushroom’s mass is located underground. It is a feather-like network of mycelia. The mycelia absorb the moisture and food that is required in order for the mushroom to grow. Mycelia need a food source that is not contaminated in order for it to flourish and colonize. There are a variety of food sources that can be used such as compost or manure and sawdust or shavings. Once colonization of the mycelia has occurred, production of the fruit bodies begins. These fruit bodies’ mature and soon recognizable mushrooms are developed.

Know Your Types

Before an individual begins to grow mushrooms, they should educate themselves as to the various types. Each type of will produce different amounts and will vary in length of growing time. Want to know the difference between growing maitake mushrooms and chanterelles? Some of the more common mushrooms are briefly discussed as follows:

•	Shiitake Mushrooms have caps that are brown in color and may have a diameter of three to four inches when fully mature. Their texture is meaty and rich. When growing indoors, the temperature at which the kits need to be stored can range from 55 to 75 degrees F. The kit should produce two to three pounds in an estimated three months. Factually, these particular mushrooms are revered highly across the Orient and are currently being studied by scientists for medicinal purposes and anti-viral properties.
•	Oyster Mushrooms have a texture and flavor of actual oysters and this is where the name comes from. The mushrooms come in a variety of colors ranging from white, gray, cream, and pink. The easiest of these to grow is the white variety. These will begin to fruit in a wide range of temperatures varying from 55 to 75 degrees F. This type needs misting at least two or three times each day and they do not fare well in humidity.
•	Common White Cap, Crimini, and Portobello Mushrooms are all of the same family. The smallest is the crimini and it is brown in color. Portobello’s can grow in diameter up to six inches. These mushrooms usually take three months or longer to grow but sunlight is not required for growth. These kits will yield more than any other as they will harvest between three to six pounds.

By simply following the directions that accompany the kits, an individual can grow and harvest all the mushrooms they want or need for much less the expense.

Mushroom gardeners abroad use different techniques for growing this delicacy. With indoor growing becoming an ever popular trend, mushroom growing kits have become a favorite for the majority. Kits contain the supplies and materials that are needed as well as detailed instructions that are easy to follow. There are kits for almost every type of mushroom and they can be grown year round without the climate being an issue. Some of the more popular types for indoor growth are portobello, oyster, shiitake, and more. Growing button mushrooms are also a popular choice. These most generally produce a better yield, often as much as three to five pounds, depending upon diligence in harvesting the mushrooms when ready to give room for the maturation of others.

Purchasing a Kit

Growing kits are available at most gardening stores and even in many larger retail stores. With many individuals turning to online shopping, there are many sites that offer supplies and kits for the mushroom enthusiast. Once a kit has been purchased, it should be meticulously inspected for colored mold and other abnormalities. If there are problems of any kind, it should be returned to the source of purchase for a replacement or a refund. Most kits are moderately priced between twenty to thirty dollars. Some types of mushrooms are also available in a jumbo variety yielding fruits that may be as big as a saucer.

Easy Use

Growing organic mushrooms indoors at home using a kit is a rather easy task that takes only a minimum amount of tending once assembled. Individuals should follow the directions that are included for assembly, care, and harvesting. Helpful tips to producing the greatest amount of yield possible are some of the following:

•	Never use any type of fertilizer on mushrooms. This will kill the spores and cause the garden to fail. The soil contained in the kits has all the nutrients necessary.
•	Use only rain, well, or spring water. This type of water is non-chlorinated.
•	Maintain moisture in the beds. They should be damp and never wet.
•	Use a spray bottle to water the beds. The bottle will allow for the water to be delivered in a mist and not poured on the beds.
•	Always place the mushroom growing beds in a dark, cool, and damp area of the home such as a basement or even a cellar. When there is no other location, a large closet, cabinet, or cupboard can also be used.
•	The area where the beds will be placed should be at a temperature of 55 to 65 degrees F. Never allow the temperature to go above 70 degrees F as this will destroy any chance of a yield.
•	Watch closely for fully matured mushrooms. Always harvest them as soon as possible after full maturation.

Many mushroom lovers become die hard mushroom gardeners after their first success. Once they succeed indoors many move on to outdoor growing or even do both. It is, after all, rewarding to be able to enjoy the fruits of labor in a favorite dish at the end of harvesting. Ready to learn more? Generally, both parents must work and many times the children are busy with school activities. In order to spend quality time together, numerous families plan and participate in some sort of family project. Some of these are choosing to start a mushroom garden as their fun family project. Mushrooms are fairly easy to grow indoors and require very little time or effort. Follow this mushroom growing guide for more help!

Getting Started

Most individuals start growing mushrooms by purchasing a kit at their local gardening or retail store. Kits include everything that is needed and are very cost effective at twenty to thirty dollars. Nearly all types of mushrooms are available in kits. Kits should be inspected for any type of colored mold and any other defects so they can be replaced if needed. Detailed instructions will also be included and should be followed. Additional tips for growing mushrooms are some of the following:

•	Choose an area to grow the mushrooms that is dark and cool such as a basement, closet, cellar, or even a cabinet.
•	Maintain the temperature in the selected area between 60 to 75 degrees F.
•	Mushrooms do not do well in high humidity so this should be monitored.
•	Never allow the mushroom bed to dry out. Water the bed by using a spray bottle to mist the water. The bed should be damp not wet.
•	It is very important to use only non-chlorinated water such as spring, well, or rain water.
•	Make sure to check to see if the bed needs watering at least every two days.
•	Never fertilize mushrooms.
•	Each variety of mushrooms will take a different length of time before they are ready to be harvested. Most require a month.
•	After a month, if there are no mushrooms popping out. The bed can be placed in a refrigerator to boost the process. If this does not work then the kit may have been faulty. Many retailers of these kits will replace them in this case.
•	Once the mushrooms begin to pop out, they are ready for harvesting.
•	Harvest the mushrooms by cutting them at the base of the stem. They can also be harvested by using the fingers to pinch them off at the base.
•	Harvested mushrooms are ready to for the table but always thoroughly wash these before eating.

Also, remember that the mushrooms will continue to pop out in waves. One kit will usually yield several harvests. After harvesting is complete, the kits can be placed on a compost pile and often more mushrooms will grow and can be harvested. Many families find this project very enjoyable because they are not only spending time together but are enjoying the fruits of their labor. Often, the project is repeated as mushrooms cost a great deal in grocery stores and raising them benefits the family budget.

With the ever increasing prices that people are being asked to pay, more and more individuals are retaliating by growing their own mushrooms. Many have found that mushroom gardening is fun and easy. There are many different techniques that are suggested and most all of them end in an abundant harvest for the gardener. With some research and comparison shopping, everyone should be able to grow mushrooms.

Growing Mushrooms Guide

Mushrooms can be grown indoors in any climate. They should be exposed to very little amounts of sunlight and should be maintained in the dark as much as possible. Cellars, basements, closets, or cabinets are really good locations for growing this delicacy. The chosen location for the garden should be well ventilated. Carbon dioxide is produced by mushroom beds; therefore, it is necessary that the air is circulated substantially. The temperature should be maintained in the range of 55 to 65 degrees F and the humidity level should be around eighty percent.

Mushroom Houses

Some individuals may choose to design and build a “mushroom house”. Most of these individual’s plan to continue growing mushrooms in the future. These are simple sheds or cellars that will only be used for growing crops of mushrooms. When designing these buildings, individuals need to keep in mind that it needs to be dark, clean, ventilated, promote air circulation, and be well insulated so the environment will offer a temperature that is constant. If planning to garden in the building year round, it will require some sort of heating system in order to keep the temperature around sixty degrees F. The location of the building should be one that is protected from winds that will be cold and the building itself needs to be draft, rain, and animal proof.

Getting Started

With the various techniques, many gardeners simply use trial and error to find what works the best for them. Following are the steps to one technique for growing mushrooms:

•	Start with sterilized mushroom farm compost that contains mushroom spores in the mix.
•	Cover the compost with about one inch of peat. This is sterilized topsoil.
• Lightly water the soil so that it is only damp not wet.
•	Continue to water about 3 times weekly using a spray bottle to lightly moisten the compost.
•	Never fertilize the compost.

After about a month of gardening, most mushrooms have popped up and are ready to be harvested. Many types will yield several crops from one batch. To harvest the mushrooms, the gardener should cut the stalks of the mushroom even with the level of the soil. Harvesting will most likely come in waves and should be done until there are no more appearances. When harvest is complete, beds should be sanitized and a new crop of mushrooms can be started. Some choose to grow them indoors while others enjoy the challenge of outdoor growing. Organic mushroom kits make for the easiest route of starting a mushroom garden. They contain a growing medium with the mushroom spores in it. Within a few days, the fruits of one’s labor will begin to pop up, especially if you use this easy to follow growing mushrooms guide.

Simple Instructions

Most all gardening and many retail stores offer the mushroom growing kits as well as many online stores. Prices vary depending upon what the kit contains. Most range in price from twenty to thirty dollars. When selecting a kit, note that it should be organically certified. Be aware if a kit says “natural” or “made with organic materials” it is not totally organic. Kits that have a “USDA Certified Organic” label are the only ones that consist of materials that are completely organic. Only these types of kits should be used. Purchase the kit between one to three days of planting as most kits do not do well during long storage periods.

These kits should be inspected for any abnormalities such as colored molds. If there are any problems suspected, a replacement kit should be obtained. Most retailers of the kits will gladly exchange kits that are faulty in any way. Individuals may enjoy the fruits of their labor by simply following the simple growing instructions:

•	Start by selecting an area that is dark and cool like a cabinet, pantry, basement, or even a closet for growing. Maintain the selected space at a temperature below 80 degrees F. The recommended range of temperature is 60 to 75 degrees F.
•	The growing medium should be soaked in water that is cold and non-chlorinated for a period of two or three hours. Rain, spring, or well water is most recommended.
•	Place the growing medium on a flat surface in the area selected for the growing process. Put the growing medium in a leak proof container. Maintain darkness in the area as much as possible. A scant amount of sunlight will not harm the growth of the mushrooms.
•	Always maintain the moisture of the growing medium. Do not allow it to dry out as the mushrooms will not sprout. At least every two days the medium should be checked for moisture and watered using a watering can when needed.
•	When the mushrooms pop up out of the ground, they are ready to be harvested. For some types of mushrooms, this will occur in about a week. Other types will take more time to begin to sprout as much as a month in some cases.
•	Always harvest the mushrooms by snipping them at their base with a pair of scissors. Individuals can also use their fingers to pinch the mushrooms off.
•	After harvesting, mushrooms should be washed before they are eaten.

Often two or more pounds of mushrooms will be harvested from a kit. This will differ depending upon the type of mushroom that is being grown. After a kit has been used and harvesting is finished, the kit can be put on a compost pile. In some cases, a few more mushrooms may even appear.

A growing number of people have started growing their own mushrooms indoors at home. Most began doing this due to the outrageous cost of mushrooms in supermarkets and grocery stores. Not only do mushrooms cost much less this way but many tend to feel that they have a better flavor than those available on the market. Growing chanterelle mushrooms can be easily done at home using various different techniques. The majority of individuals choose to use a kit. Kits contain everything that is needed to harvest a bountiful crop of mushrooms. Other options include buying the mushroom spawns and other materials for production.

A Look at Kits

Mushroom growing kits are usually available in gardening stores as well as many retail stores. Online gardening shops are a good source and often offer a wider variety of mushroom types and many different sizes of kits. These will not only include all items necessary for growth but detailed instructions that should be followed without eliminating or adding any steps. After purchasing, individuals should thoroughly inspect the kit to make sure there is no mold present. If there are any problems with the kit, it should be returned for replacement. Defective kits will not produce.

Some Easy Tips

Individuals must first select the type of mushroom that they wish to grow. Each type will take a different length of time before they are ready for harvest. There are some easy tips for growing mushrooms at home that can be applied regardless of the technique an individual plans to use. Following are several of the most important tips:
•	Select an area to grow the mushrooms that is cool and dark. A basement or cellar is the best place. Those with limited space often use a closet or even an empty cabinet.
•	Maintain the temperature of the selected area between 55 and 65 degrees F.
•	Make sure there is a very limited amount of sunlight that is allowed into the area.
•	Wear gloves when working with the mushrooms. Mushrooms are very delicate and are easily harmed by substances that may be on an individual’s hands.
•	Water used on mushroom beds should be non-chlorinated. Rain water is most recommended but spring and well water will suffice.
•	Always check the beds to see if they need water at least every two days. Beds should be kept moist not wet.
•	Never pour water directly onto the beds. Use a spray bottle to mist water until the beds are moist.
•	Spray cooking oil on the flaps of the beds to deter insects. Oil traps and kills insects before they get a chance to invade the beds.

These are only a few of many available tips. In order to produce the best mushrooms, individuals should research the growing hobby. Before buying supplies to get production started, they should also comparison shop in order to produce mushrooms that are not only delicious but cost effective as well.
